PLAA Partners with Vets
What is Partners with Vets?
In an effort to help practicing veterinarians become familiar with camelids and their health needs, PLAA has decided to provide a camelid reference package to one vet each year. The reference package includes Lama* Alpaca Veterinary Field Manual by C. Norman Evans, D.V.M. and Medicine and Surgery of South American Camelids by Murray Fowler, D.V.M.. In the past we would take nominations to send vets to GALA’s Vet’s Only sessions, but that is no longer an option for us, so we decided to give a reference package instead.
The number of llamas and alpacas continues to increase each year but the number of practicing veterinarians familiar with llamas and alpacas and their health needs has lagged far behind. Far too many veterinarians have less knowledge about llama and alpaca medical needs then the owners. PLAA is striving to close the gap.
The Partners with Vets nominations will be solicited at the Annual meeting in March and announced in the newsletter. The deadline for the nomination applications is May 30. All nominees will remain in the selection pool to be used the following years. The selection committee is comprised of three individuals approved by the PLAA Board of Directors.
As a PLAA member you can be a vital part of the Partnering Program by nominating a deserving veterinarian in your area. To nominate your vet, please fill out the Nomination Form and send it to the Selection Committee. (see address on nomination application)
